'I can't believe anyone voted for me!' - anti-betting candidate's joy'

 

Clifton Holmes, from Edgbaston, took a £500 gamble. He decided to stump up for a deposit, knowing he would lose it, to run in the Erdington by-election to try to advance an anti-gambling cause.

He didn't canvas for votes, attend a hustings or otherwise attempt to introduce himself to the electorate. When media outlets ran stories about the candidates, Clifton was represented as 'a grey silhouette', he says, laughing.

So when, as we talked, a friend came over to let him know they had seen a single vote for him on one of the counting tables, he rushed to see this unexpected sight for himself. "It's fantastic! I'm amazed anyone would vote for me," he laughed.

He said he was looking to work in schools through his training company to help educate kids about "the difference between chasing dreams and chasing losses".

Holmes ended the night with 14 votes.
